Motherly Advice!

I sat down with my mom and asked her what advice she could’ve used before completely uprooting her cushty life in the UK and moving to an unknown city across the ocean.

Like most of you, my mom and I hadn’t heard of Winnipeg, Manitoba and like most of you we were quite excited by the idea of moving across the ocean for an adventure! See my mom and I only had each other, as in my mom was a single parent and I was 12/13 before we decided to move. At the time she was a podiatrist with decent experience under her belt and she got an offer to work with a fellow podiatrist in Winnipeg, MB. So I thought, as a student studying podiatry, if I got offered a job what advice would I like? My mom said this, almost instantaneously: “DONT DO IT!” I laughed out loud, then my mom gave me serious advice. So if you’re looking to move overseas as a podiatrist, this is for you! - Check the job requirements: are they looking for a someone who is a new graduate? Or do they require you to have experience?

- if they’re looking for someone who has experience do they require you to specialise in something specific I.e diabetes, or biomechanics, wound specialist? - Next you want to take a look at the salary: will it cover your cost of living? Will it be enough to pay your bills? - Realise the social aspects of relocating: do you know anyone prior to moving? will you be isolated? Will you have a support system? Or will you be completely dependent on your socialisation skills? - Will you be moving with a young family? Is your spouse willing to move with you? and if you were anything like my family set up I.e single parent situation, then do you have full custody and can you verify that you do? - Next, assimilation, do your research prior to moving on the culture and citizenship processes. Are you going to have to give up your UK citizenship? In Canada they give you the option of having dual citizenship lucky enough but that may not be a viable option in many countries. - Other questions time consider are: if you’re unhappy with your employer are you willing to work independently? (Fortunately for my mom she was able to do this, just before her retirement she had two clinics she was running, under her belt) are you able to work for someone else again? Would you be willing to work in a hospital? - Always keep your finances in check, make sure you have enough cash with you at all times in case of emergencies I.e returning back to your country! Sorry for the long post, if you have any questions either for running a private practice or relocation that you’d like to ask my mom please let me know and I can pass them along!
